Deciding to Have a Child
Posted by in Pregnancy on January 22nd, 2010
So, you want to have a baby?
There comes an age and time in life when every person coupled or otherwise considers the question of whether or not to have a child. For some people, this is a no-brainer and they know from the time they are very young that children are in their future. For others, it is once that causes distress, concerns and worries because the urge is just not there. And still, for others it becomes an impossibility or an accidental decision. Having a baby is a huge step in life often seen as the entrance to the threshold of adulthood. There is lots of pressure, silent and outward, on people to have a baby and it is almost as if choosing otherwise is some sort of abomination.
In today’s world where men and women are becoming more equal, financially independent and are encouraged to develop passions outside of hearth and home the sheer thought of having a baby can be disgruntling. Regardless of what you think, what you have been told or what your imagination dreams of your future to be – having a child changes everything in more ways than imaginable. Some of those ways are more positive than you thought possible and others can be frustrating leaving parents to feel as if they have just entered a life sentence. Which in so many ways, they have.
The crazy thing about the decision to have children is it isn’t one that can be made early in life. It can’t be a set as a feasible goal because life changes so quickly. One minute you are in high school, college and pursuing a career-thinking babies are the enemy and a year later you are so deeply in love that you can’t imagine not sharing this special feat with that someone special. Furthermore once you make the decision to have a child and follow through, there is absolutely no turning back to the life you left. It is an all or nothing endeavor.
For intensive purposes, it is probably best to weigh the pros and cons of having children before you embark on the journey. Unfortunately, it is like concocting a travel plan to Pluto, because you don’t know the real pros and cons of having children until you do so. How could you, really? Even people who have children can’t really find the words or pinpoint the feelings of watching a birth or witnessing a first step. Having children is one of those things in life that is indefinable and felt differently by every person. It is the inhuman mixture of love and passion, fear and worry, excitement and anxiety, frustration and stress.
At the risk of sounding trite, the best way to decide whether or not having children is your destiny or not is to allow your destiny to just unfold. Keeping an open mind and realizing that should the embodiment of a child be right for you it will show itself to you at some point ensures you will not be pressured, disappointed or anxious about it. In other words, never say never and don’t place all your genetic eggs in one basket. When the time is right to have children, whether on purpose or accidentally, it will happen. Sometimes the best way to choose whether or not to become a parent and to decide if you are ready for it or not is to face the music when it begins to play.
Contrary to what you may believe in this moment, ten years ago or five years from now – having children may or may not be important in your life. Even the best laid plans can fail which means that the little pink line that says a baby is coming can and does happen to people who are both sides of the fence when it comes to this issue.
Your ultimate decision and desire to have children is one that only you can make. Having faith that the right things in your life will happen, in the proper order and that whatever your future holds, either with children or otherwise, will be happy and abundant is the best stance to take on the issue. Who knows, your decisions and thoughts are as uncertain as summer rains in the dessert and you just never really know all the answers in life for sure.

Transforming A Room Into A Nursery
Posted by in Babies on January 4th, 2010
When the time comes to create a nursery in your home, it’s likely that you’ll be feeling a mixture of excitement and concern. There will be the sense of anticipation, but there may also be some worries about how you’ll deal with the new arrival. Don’t worry – you’ll soon find that parenting comes more naturally than you might expect!
A great way to start concentrating on the arrival of the new baby is to think about some practical improvements that you might make around your home. The nursery is one room that will probably spring to mind. It’s an area of the house that will take on increasing importance in the coming months. There will be some basic changes that you’ll need to make in order to convert an existing room into the nursery.
To begin with, you might want to think about what’s in the room right now. If the room is currently being used as a spare bedroom, for example, then you might want to consider whether any of the furniture that’s already in the room could be used in the coming years. Don’t assume that the nursery should only contain new pieces of furniture and accessories. It’s often possible to make use of items that you already own.
Once you’ve looked at the furniture that you already have, it’s time to think about you may need. It may be wise to draw up a short written plan at this point. It doesn’t have to be too detailed, but it should be something that will act as a guide and that you’ll be able to refer back to. You might want to note down the various pieces of furniture that you think you need and where you intend to place them in the room.
The latest advice suggests that you should carry out any painting well in advance of your baby being born. That’s because of the dangers related to exposure to paint fumes. Take the time to do your painting nice and early. It makes sense to avoid leaving it to the very last minute, especially since you’re likely to be extremely busy in the last few weeks.
What’s the key to creating a great nursery? Is it all about buying lots of great toys, furniture and accessories? Not necessarily. Is it about creating a room that focuses on a central theme? It doesn’t have to be.
If you want to successfully transform an ordinary room into a brilliant nursery then concentrate on adding your own personal touches. They will help to set this room apart from other nurseries.

Is it Safe to Use Perfume when Pregnant?
Posted by in Pregnancy on September 21st, 2009
Something that may not occur to most pregnant women is that perfumes and other scented products may not be the most desirable thing to wear during this time. Even though something applied to the skin topically seems harmless, there are a few things to consider if you wish to use perfume when pregnant. Currently the research on this matter is somewhat inconclusive. So, is perfume harmful? Or is it something you can safely enjoy during your pregnancy?
While most research into whether it’s safe to use perfume when pregnant has not found a link to most of the common worries like miscarriage and stillbirth, some recent studies have found that there may be a link between perfume use and reproductive problems in male children. It seems that perfume use between 8 and 14 weeks of pregnancy may lead to improper development of the male sex organs. Some of the potential problems include undescended testicles, risk of testicular cancer and low sperm count. It seems that some women who use perfume when pregnant risk absorbing chemicals that affect the development of testosterone in the male fetus.
So far though, the research remains largely inconclusive, partly because the most obvious results have only taken place in rodent test subjects, not human ones. Still, if you wish to err on the side of caution, it would be best to avoid wearing perfumes or scented creams of any kind.
Generally though, most experts would say it is quite safe to use perfume when pregnant. Many pregnant women find however, that scents they used to enjoy now trigger nausea, light-headedness or headaches. If this is the case, it’s usually best to remove all fragrance from your environment to begin with, and then gradually add one fragrance at a time, starting with the mildest. You may wish to experiment with body sprays and lotions, because they are often less intense than perfume, and tend to contain less alcohol.
If you wish to use perfume when pregnant, you might try some natural scents that are known for being pleasant and soothing. Scents like peppermint, ginger and cardamom have been known to help fight nausea, and citrus scents like lemon, neroli and mandarin seem to help soothe feelings of nausea as well as leaving a feeling of refreshment and relaxation. Other soft scents to consider are rose, chamomile and lavender. These scents make lovely massage oils as well.
While most perfumes are relatively safe, this is not always the case with essential oils. Because they are so concentrated, and are derived from plants, some can be toxic on the surface of the skin. Be sure to consult your doctor before using.
So, is perfume harmful? The answer is not completely cut and dry, but it most likely is safe for pregnant women to use. If you have any doubts over whether you should use perfume when pregnant, consult your doctor. As long as you feel comfortable, you can continue to enjoy scents that will make you feel relaxed and happy.

Baby safety monitors
Posted by in Babies on July 13th, 2009
Baby safety monitors, what are they?
Baby safety monitors are baby devices used to relieve parents of worries when they are not in the same room as their baby. The sounds coming from the baby’s room are transmitted to the parents’ receiver so they know what is going on in baby’s room.
Baby safety monitors allow a remote monitoring of children, alerting parents when the baby cries. Hence, those devices allow parents to keep contact with the baby without disturbing them. Baby safety monitors can be used as soon as the baby is born. and consist of a transmitter, placed in the child’s room, and of a receiver, placed in the parents’ room.
Prices
The prices vary in function of the models. The type of transmission technology used will impact on the price of the device. While some devices will only transmit and receive sounds, others more sophisticated monitors will offer an infrared video camera that allow parents to see what their baby is doing at all time. The size of the device also impact on the cost of the intercom, the smaller ones being the most expensive ones. Other newer devices even offer more high-tech features that may be useful. For example, some models include a warning by vibrating mode of parents’ mobile phones or a silent mode receiver which consist of small lights which luminosity will vary depending on the intensity of the recorded sound. Those features can be very useful if a loud sound covers the sound of the monitor, such as a vacuum cleaner.
Length of reach
When choosing an baby safety monitor, it is important to identify what is needed and the minimum length of reach needed in order to be able to receive the sounds (or images in some cases). For apartments the range will be smaller (few feet or meters) while big houses will need a much larger length of reach range(few hundreds feet or meters). When the monitor uses radio waves, it is also important to consider the number of channels available. The more channels the monitor has, the less subject to interference in the neighborhood your it will be. Less expensive models have one or two frequencies, while high-end models offer up to 64 different frequencies. In between, models offer a range of options (8, 10, 12 frequencies).
Autonomy
Baby safety monitors can be powered by 3 different source of power: battery, rechargeable battery or AC power. Models that are powered on batteries are generally less expensive, but their autonomy is more limited and on the long run, the cost of batteries to power the intercom can become quite expensive! Their great advantage is (just like the rechargeable battery models) to being portable, are easy for parents to move around. Models that are powered with a rechargeable battery tend to be generally a little more expensive than the basic battery model, but on the long run, those models can come up less expensive to maintain. AC models need to be constantly connected to a power outlet to function, and are therefore mostly used at night, when they don’t need to be moved around.
