Baby Skin Care, treating cradle cap and nappy rash naturally

According to Loyola University, the average one-month-old baby is bathed four times each week and shampooed three times. Commercial Baby Skin Care Products are loaded with chemicals, fragrances and detergents that dry out sensitive skin and often cause skin rashes in babies and young children. As a result more products are applied with a further de-hydrating affect on your precious baby’s skin. For a natural approach to Baby Skin Care newborn babies need only an occasional bath in warm water and no soap or shampoo is needed. If you are treating cradle cap, nappy rash or skin rashes in babies, then use only natural baby skin care products.

We recommend looking after your baby’s skin with Natural Products that are organic relief for your baby’s skin and scalp and  won’t dry out skin. Baby skin care products should have a pH 5.5 and be free of Sodium Lauryl sulphate, soap agents and fragrances.

Over 75 percent of newborn babies get nappy rash within the first months after birth. Nappy Rash most commonly occurs due to bacteria and detergent residues that are not completely rinsed off when nappies are changed and/or washed. It is important to keep your baby’s sensitive skin clean and well hydrated and if nappy rash does occur, we feel natural skin care products and natural treatment of nappy rash and skin rashes in babies is imperative, giving your baby the best organic start in life.

The standard medical treatment for skin rashes and nappy rash is cortisone cream. Fortunately, some paediatricians prefer not use such strong steroids purely for cosmetic reasons. Try Pure Organic Aloe Vera to nourish, moisturise and protect your baby’s sensitive skin. Organic Aloe Vera will gently re-hydrate the most sensitive skin, without fragrance, colour, SLS or gelling agent added. Apply with every diaper/nappy change and don’t rub in; allow a few minutes to dry. The lotion will absorb naturally and allow for much loved nappy free time. We recommend washing the nappy area with clean water each diaper/nappy change then patting dry before applying Aloe Vera lotion. Without a powder base this baby skin care treatment insures no concerns of inhalation. Apply a barrier cream to protect your baby’s sensitive skin. A natural baby skin care barrier cream protects against further de- hydration and assists in keeping nappy rash and skin rashes in babies at bay. Apply with every diaper/nappy change.

Aloe Vera has a pH factor very close to that of the skin and it helps to restore the skin to its natural pH. Six antiseptics naturally contained in Aloe Vera soothe nappy rash, baby skin rashes, inflammation and irritated skin and reduce the chance of further infection. Aloe Vera is a mild anaesthetic, antibacterial & antifungal, containing anti-inflammatory fatty acids. These components have shown to assist in relieving itching, swelling, redness and pain. Aloe Vera is a natural moisturiser, fragrance and oil free, perfect for baby skin care products and treating cradle cap, nappy rash and other skin rashes in babies.

Cradle Cap is a thick, yellowish, crusty rash that forms on the scalp and sometimes the eyebrows of babies. Cradle Cap can be found on newborn babies skin, on toddler scalps and if persistent cradle cap can still be found on pre-schoolers. Cradle Cap is not dangerous, only unsightly. Cradle Cap in babies and young children is caused partly by an over production of oil. We suggest, if harsh detergents are used in baby care products and used daily, the bodies natural oil production is stimulated to counter act the drying effects of these so called ‘gentle’ baby care products. Instead, apply Aloe Vera products directly onto the skin, just a fine mist at a time but apply regularly to soften cradle cap crusts, then after bathing rub gently with a towel or a soft hair brush to remove cradle cap crusts. Several attempts may be needed.

Organic Aloe Vera Natural Skin Care Products are ideal for baby skin care. Aloe Vera is natural skin treatment that will gently re-hydrate the most sensitive baby skin. Aloe Vera will cleanse, repair, moisturise and protect the most sensitive skin without fear of petroleum by products, SLS, fragrance, colour, gelling agents or fillers added.

Baby Care – Clothing and Accessories

A mother-to-be derives great enjoyment out of getting the layette ready. But, pleasant as it is, the monetary cost, the laundering time, and the effort of actually putting clothes on the baby must also be kept in mind.

Diapers are the only form of clothing that need to be bought in quantity. Babies grow quickly in the first months, and their needs constantly change. When shopping for the layette, keep the following in mind: (1) clothing should have growing space; (2) garments should be easy to launder; (3) all items should be safe and comfortable for the baby to wear or use; and (4) garments should be simple enough to take a minimum of time to dress and undress the infant.

Trendy clothes for tots may look cute on dolls, but are often impractical for real, live babies, who loathe being dressed and undressed and express their exasperation by crying loudly and angrily. A crying baby is rigid and uncooperative, as the parent fumbling with buttons and ribbons soon discovers. It is well worth searching for clothing that is secured with snap fasteners rather than that which must be pulled and tugged over the baby’s head. Infant clothes should be loose and easy to slip on and off. In addition, older babies will try to chew on buttons, so snaps are much safer.

The newborn baby’s tender skin is easily irritated by the starchy substance in new materials. It is wise to launder all clothing, diapers, wrapping blankets, or similar articles that will touch the baby’s skin before they are used. Use mild soapsuds in warm water for washing clothes the first time and make sure that all the soap is thoroughly rinsed.

It is also wise to remove all labels from inside the garments. Labels can irritate a baby’s sensitive skin.

The most important article in the baby’s layette is the diaper. The choice is wide. A new parent should consider the following:

(1) If a diaper service is available, does it also provide the diapers? Is the price reasonable?

(2) Disposables are of course convenient for traveling, but are not as absorbent as cloth diapers. Is there enough storage for the large quantities needed?

(3) Is there time enough for a parent to launder and sterilize diapers?

Remember, the diaper service has to be arranged before the baby’s birth.

When laundering diapers, do not use harsh detergents; many parents prefer to use mild soapsuds. Even more important, it is essential to rinse diapers thoroughly after laundering to prevent irritation of the baby’s skin.

Protecting Your Baby’s Skin in Winter

Winter conditions such as dry winds, cold temperatures, snow, and rain can be harmful for your baby. It is common for babies and young children to get sick in the winter because of decreasing temperatures and the flu season. The harsh winter weather alone can cause damage to your baby’s skin. Their skin is so sensitive and can become irritated more so than adults’ skin. Cold winter air and dry, heated indoor air can cause irritation and dryness of the skin making eczema flare ups more frequent. Here are some ways to protect your baby’s skin during the winter.

When bathing your baby, be extra cautious of the water temperature. You should always practice safe bathing techniques, not just in the winter. The temperature should be lukewarm, a mixture of hot and cold water. Cold water will making your baby uncomfortable and water that is too hot can dry the skin out more or burn their sensitive skin. Also, use soap made from natural products that aren’t too heavily scented. Unnatural products can contain harsh chemicals that could make a winter rash worse. Moisturizing after bathing is smart because the skin is clean. It is common for babies to suffer from eczema, so using eczema oil will help to prevent that.

You may be surprised to know that babies can regulate their body temperature just as well as adults can. Don’t dress your baby in too many layers trying to keep them warm. If your baby becomes overheated they may develop an irritating heat rash. Keep your baby warm with jackets and blankets. Dress your baby in material that can breathe a little such as cotton. Dress your baby as you would dress yourself. It is common to add an extra layer of clothing to your outfit to stay warm, but only layer up once.

Adults and babies are often irritated by chapped lips during the winter. It may not seem like your baby’s lips could get chapped because they appear moist from drooling, teething, or having a pacifier. You can use a lip balm on your baby but make sure it isn’t the kind that has a tint of color. Find an organic brand that won’t cause irritation. Using lip balm will add a protective layer that will heal or prevent chapped lips.

To protect your baby’s hands and feet, which are often exposed to the outside elements, you can use gloves and socks. Wearing gloves will protect your baby’s hands from cold winter winds. When skin is exposed to wind, cold air, and other elements, the skin can become very dry. A lot of heat is also lost through the tops of our heads. Find a cute, little beanie or hat for your baby to wear. Unlike adults, some babies don’t have a lot of hair to keep the tops of their heads warm.

Choosing The Right Fabric For Your Swaddle Blanket

Congratulations, you have decided to swaddle your baby. You have made the decision, so now what do you do? Lets take a look at a few tips that might help make swaddling even easier for you and your baby .

Before your baby is born, or now if your bundle has already been born, I suggest that you look into what kind of fabric you want your swaddle blanket to have. Everyone has different preferences for texture, fabric blend, dyes (for patterned blankets), and if you want your blanket to be organic or not. While choosing this aspect, I would keep in mind what climate your newborn will be in. Is it summer or winter? Is the baby going to be sleeping with you or in your room, or is she or he going to be in a separate room? What is the temperature where the baby will be doing the majority of their sleeping? Do you or do you think your baby might have sensitive skin, or allergies. And finally, will you or your baby be traveling a lot, (together on trips, or will your child be going to child care).

For safety, fabrics need to be lightweight to decrease the chance that your baby will become overheated. This is where your climate can be a factor. If your baby is a summer baby or will be sleeping with you, chances are they will be more comfortable in a lightweight breathable fabric. Another option is to use a swaddle blanket that is smaller, that would only wrap around their body once. It is not recommended to use heavy blankets, such as fleece, as these tend to keep the baby too warm and can cause overheating.

If you, or your baby have sensitive skin, or allergies, an organic blanket might be a good choice for you. Dyes can be irritating to some skin, and remember you will be in contact with this blanket almost as much as your infant, so if it agitates you, you may need to use something more natural. Also, once you have purchased your blanket it is a good idea to wash it with the laundry soap you plan on using for you babies things, this way you know its clean, and it will smell like home.

If you plan on traveling, camping, or sending the blanket to a childcare center, you would want to find a blanket that is durable and easily washable. Cotton is always good in this situation, but muslin wraps also seem to fair well with repeated washings. Also in these situations you might want to opt for a patterned blanket, as it has a better chance of hiding accidental staining.

Swaddling is great for your baby, and finding the right blanket for you and your lifestyle can be easy. When you consider your environment and expectations for your blanket you will be able to find the one that’s right for you. Happy swaddling!

Use Cloth Diapers During Potty Training

There are many advantages for using cloth diapers that go far beyond the health of your baby’s skin. First and foremost, cloth diapers are less abrasive against your baby’s soft, sensitive skin which causes fewer rashes than disposable diapers. Cloth is more economical because you wash and reuse the diapers instead of throwing them away after one use like how disposable ones are designed. Diapers can be very expensive if you have to keep buying them, and cloth is a onetime investment that gets multiple uses. They are also better for the environment because disposable diapers are often times not biodegradable and cloth isn’t meant to be thrown away.

The best advantage that most parents have experienced with the use of cloth diapers is that their babies potty train earlier than most kids that wear disposable ones. On average, babies that wear cloth potty train up to six months earlier than expected which have been proven in studies about potty training. If you talk to parents that use cloth, they will likely tell you that their babies were potty trained before they were two years old. Cloth diapers also make potty training easier in addition to happening faster. Disposable diapers are too absorbent and babies can’t feel when they are wet. You may think this is an advantage because it’s more comfortable for your baby, but that can become a problem during potty training. It is thought that babies want to potty train earlier because they don’t like the wet feeling from cloth. Also, your baby will know when to go to the bathroom because they can feel when the diaper is wet.

It is common for babies to have a lot of accidents during potty training. It is a new feeling that they have to learn to understand when they need to go to the bathroom. Another advantage of using cloth during potty training is that you’ll save a lot of money. Instead of having to buy a lot of disposable diapers after each accident, you can just wash the cloth ones and reuse them. Cloth diapers have come a long way and can be bought with Velcro attaching or even fitted for your baby. More parents are switching to cloth because of this convenient feature and they don’t have to use pins to secure the diaper. Because of the newer features of cloth diapers that are fitted, it makes them easy to use during potty training. They act just like a pull up but have more advantages.

Cloth diapers should be used during potty training, and before as well, because of the advantages they offer to both the parents and babies. They are convenient, more economical, better for your babies’ skin, better for the environment, and most important they will make your baby potty train earlier and easier.

Cotton – Best Choice For Babies

One of the main benefits of cotton clothing is the softness of the fabric. With a babies newborn skin it is sensitive, anything harsh will rub and irritate their new skin. Cotton is a super soft natural fabric that allows for better air circulation, which helps remove and absorb body moisture, drawing heat away from the skin and keeping the body cool and dry providing an ideal sleeping environment for baby. Also, because cotton clothing “breathes” better, it’s the best choice to keep your baby cool in hot, humid weather. The ends of cotton fibers are
spun very tightly into the yarn so that the fabric doesn’t irritate skin or cause static electricity making it very comfortable to be swaddled, dressed or diapered for babies.

Cotton is the preferred choice in hospitals and birthing centers, you will notice your newborn being swaddled in cotton receiving blankets after birth. Being non-allergenic, it is an excellent choice of material for anyone who suffers from asthma or allergies, or those who have sensitive skin prone to irritation. Pediatricians will sometimes suggest using cotton clothing and blankets for babies that have eczema or other skin maladies, before they will encourage using harsh steriod creams. Dermatologists also recommend wearing and using cotton products.

The fabric is durable, versatile and easy to care for. It can be washed in the washing machine and either hung to dry or put in the tumble dryer. It releases soil easily to retain appearance and be hygienically clean to be the ideal wash-and-wear-fabric – for you and for your family. Cotton has high tensile strength therefore can endure high temperatures and be sterilized. It is the only fiber that becomes stronger when wet being highly absorbent for drawing moisture out, providing premium comfort and softness for a happier baby.

For people concerned with environmental issues, cotton clothing makes a lot of sense. Cotton is biodegradable and a renewable resource. Cotton does not contain any chemicals and therefore is a natural product. In addition, cotton products are “finish free,” whereas synthetic fibers are often chemically treated to make the fiber suitable for processing. Organic cotton differs from regular cotton in the fact that no pesticides are used to grow it, which means less chemicals in the environment and less exposure for the people growing it.

Cotton absorbs moisture easily and can take up to one fifth of its weight in water before it actually feels damp, this being a great benefit if you diaper your baby in cotton diapers. Baby boys benefit from cotton diapers — The Kiel study found that excess heat in the groin area of boy babies wearing disposable diapers may be a cause of the reduced sperm count among males in recent years. Not only is baby more comfortable in cotton, this natural fiber is heathier for them!

Bottom line, the benefits of cotton are numerous, when having a new baby we as parents strive to do the best for our children, doesn’t it make sense to clothe, wrap and diaper them naturally? After all a happy baby makes a happy mama and if cotton helps……… why not?
