Stroller Safety & Usage Guidelines
Posted by in Babies on February 13th, 2010
Spending quality “strolling” time with your child should be an enjoyable and safe experience. Stroller safety guidelines are designed to give you tips for the usage of your new or existing models, keeping your precious cargo happy and safe.
PRE-OWNED STROLLERS
• Safety: Because your child depends on your judgment for their safety, it is up to you to make sure that a pre-owned stroller is safe for use. Typically, if it is over 10 years old, it may not meet the current safety standards. A good resource to start the research process is the Consumer Product Safety Commission at www.cpsc.gov or and for federal recalls, www.recalls.gov to check for product alerts.
• Maintenance: Make sure that the stroller has been properly maintained. Check that all of the parts are in proper working order.
Important Checklist:
1. Structure: Is the frame structure sturdy? Look for an ASTM International (American Society for Testing and Materials) or JPMA (Juvenile Products Manufacturers Associates) sticker. This means that the manufacturer has voluntarily met all safety standards during the year of manufacturing.
2. Harness: Is the stitching secure and the buckles all work? Does it have the preferred five-point harness that goes around the waist, between the legs and over the shoulder? A three-point harness goes around the waist and between the legs and should only be used for older children.
3. Wheels: Are the wheels tight? Do they roll properly?
4. Breaks: Does the stroller have breaks and do they work?
5. Cleanliness: Is the stroller clean and free of mold and allergens?
NEW STROLLERS
• Manufacturer’s Directions: The manufacturers have tested their product and should be used accordingly to ensure the safety of your child. What might work for one model may not be correct with another design or brand. It is IMPORTANT that you read all of the operating instructions and USE THEM!
• Registration Card: Fill out the registration card so if there are any safety alerts or recalls, you will be informed by the manufacturer. Remember, your child depends on you for their safety.
• Size and Weight: Your new stroller should be appropriate for the size and weight of your child. Lie infants flat and fully reclined or use a travel system where a car seat can be attached. As the child ages, be aware of the manufactures weight limits. If the wrong size is used, it can become unbalanced and put your child in danger.

USING YOUR STROLLER
• Opening and Closing: Watch the little fingers! Keep your child at a safe distance when opening and closing. Once opened, completely lock it into place before placing you child in the stroller. Refer to your owner’s manual as products open and close differently.
• Buckle Up! The harness is there for a reason, to keep your child safe! Get in the habit of properly buckling up with EVERY use. The safest models have a five-point harness that goes around the waist, between the legs and over the shoulder. A three-point harness goes around the waist and between the legs and should only be used for older children.
• Brakes: Strollers can easily roll away even on the slightest incline. As with buckling up, get in the habit of always using the break when you remove your hands. The breaks should be on when inserting and removing your child.
• Storage Areas: Babies require numerous supplies and it is tempting to overload. A stroller should not be used as a shopping cart nor should items be placed on your child. Hanging objects on the handles can also cause it to tip over and can be dangerous.
• Unattended Children: It only takes a second for something to happen to your child. Never leave your child unattended.
• Sleeping Child: Close off the leg opening so your child cannot fall through in the carriage or reclined position. If the openings do not close, keep the seat backrest upright. If you have a reclining model, make sure that it is in the properly locked position so the child does not fall backwards when reclining.
• Weather protection: Use the sun canopy for protection. Whether you have a classic design, jogging stroller or bicycle trailer, there are additional add on products that you can purchase to protect your child from the elements. It is encouraged that you have the weather protection gear.
• Maintenance: Life with a baby is often hectic but it is very important for the safety of your child to do regular safety checks.
Maintenance Checklist:
1. Structure: Is the frame structure sturdy?
2. Harness: Is the stitching secure and the buckles all work?
3. Wheels: Are the wheels tight, free of obstructions and roll properly?
4. Breaks: Does it have efficient brake pads?
5. Cleanliness: Is it clean and free of mold and allergens?

Silvercross Prams – Things You Need to Know Before You Buy
Posted by in Babies on January 4th, 2010
Here are a few other things to keep in mind:
> If you travel by car, you should compare the size of the boot with the dimension of the pushchair or pram (when folded).
> For general use, think about getting a travel system that’s a combination pushchair and baby car seat.
> If you do a lot of walking, you will want to pick sturdy pushchair that has lockable wheels so that it will be easier to handle on rough surfaces, remembering also that swivel wheels will make it easier to manoeuvre (some models come with both options). The handle height may also be adjustable.
What your baby needs
Since a newborn has to lie back, you will want to buy a Silver Cross pushchair/carrycot combination, a pram, or a pushchair with a lie-back capability, and you may find one with a seat unit that is fully reversible, meaning that your baby will be facing you. A pushchair usually has a reclining bucket seat or a lie-back seat, and it is intended for newborn babies, older infants, and toddlers. Once you decide whether you child will sleep in a cot, carrycot, Moses basket, or crib, this will help you in making your decision.
Safety features
In the United Kingdom, the law requires that every pushchair sold must meet with established standards, and the car seat in travel systems must also comply with European standards. To help keep your child safe, keep the following points in mind:
> Before you begin to use your new pushchair, read all of the instructions and become familiar with every one of its moving parts.
> As you open the pushchair, make certain that the locking devices are in place, and release all of them when you fold it.
> Use the five-point harness to secure your child, and use the breaks whenever you stop, even on a flat surface.
> Remember that hanging a heavy item on one of the handles could cause your pram or pushchair to tip over.
Here are some choices that may interest you:
> a two-in-one-pram and pushchair, which is a practical combination of the pram’s comfort and the pushchair’s versatility,
> a three-in-one-pram and pushchair, which includes a carrycot and can be used to transport a newborn, and
> a travel system that includes a car seat.
Any Silver Cross pushchair or pram will operate properly and last longer if you take good care of it, and the instruction leaflet you will receive will help you to do just that.

Tandem Jogging Strollers – 3 Factors to Consider Before A Double Jogging Stroller
Posted by in Babies on September 19th, 2009
Tandem jogging strollers are a must have baby accessory in the family if you would like to go jogging outdoors while taking your two kids with you. However, having to choose from literally hundreds of different models available can be an overwhelming task. Here are 3 factors to take into consideration before finalizing the purchase.
1. Choose from two different seating positions
The most common double jogging strollers are those that have seats that are side by side and then are those that have one seat in front of the other. One factor to keep in mind for seats positioned next to each other is that it may be difficult to move through grocery aisles. While the other seating position offers better maneuverability, you may have a problem if the child in back kicks the one in front.
2. Keep in mind where you will be jogging
Another factor that makes a significant difference is where you will be traversing as there are specific models built for different conditions. For example, strollers that have a front wheel that swivels are best suited for urban environments as it easier to push around. Likewise, fixed front wheels are more appropriate for bumpy terrains as it ensures a more stable ride.
3. Safety is of utmost importance
Most strollers from popular brands such as BOB or Baby Trend will come standard with safety features but there is nothing wrong with taking precautions. A 5 point harness is a must have in order to ensure the safety of your child and that they are secured firmly in place. When you need to make quick stops then handbrakes are crucial for both you and your baby.
Places to find discount prices include shopping at online retail sites and by taking advantage of clearance items at local department stores. Even saving a little money can prove extremely beneficial but be sure to take these 3 factors into consideration before making the purchase.

How to Choose a Jogging Stroller
Posted by in Babies on July 24th, 2009
Having a baby to take care of all day does not stop most parents from continuing their daily exercise routines. In fact, exercise boosts energy levels which can allow parents to have more energy for their kids. To make jogging possible for parents who have to be with their babies most of the time, stroller manufacturers have created the infamous jogging stroller.
Jogging strollers are the latest in innovative design and are built with specific features to make the ride comfortable and enjoyable for babies while their parents jog. These types of baby strollers come in a variety designs to accommodate to the needs of both the parents and the babies. By looking at the various components of jogging strollers, parents can make better choices for their purchase.
Safety: Safety is extremely important to consider for jogging strollers because the ride is not a calm and slow one. Due to increased speeds, babies should be secured in a harness that is reliable. For this purpose, the jogging stroller should come with a five-point harness, which is the safest kind.
Wheel Size: The bigger the wheels the easier it is to stroll over rough and bumpy terrain. The smaller the wheels of jogging strollers, the better they are for walking or jogging on smooth terrain. Generally, jogging strollers come with big wheels for easy pushing, going over curbs and less resistance. Smaller wheels, on the other, hand have better maneuverability for turns. Usually, there are two wheels in the back and one in the front and wheel sizes range from 12 to 20 inches. Wheel size is an important factor for the different jogging styles of parents.
• 12” wheels are beneficial for less frequent walking, smooth surfaces and indoor conditions like a mall.
• 16” wheels are convenient for outdoor walking and jogging frequently and for semi-smooth terrain.
• 20” wheels are best for regular and long-distance jogging on rough surfaces and off-road conditions.
Front Wheel: Some jogging strollers come with a front wheel that swivels while others have a front wheel that is fixed. The fixed wheel makes it more comfortable as it is stable and allows parents to jog straight. However, the stroller must be tilted back on its rear wheels to make turns. Swivel wheels are convenient for indoor use but they are generally smaller which makes it more difficult to maneuver on rough terrain. Fixed wheels are better for outdoor running while swivel wheels are best for indoor walking.
Suspension System: Once a parent decides the type of jogging he or she will do and on what surfaces, the suspension system will be important. Suspension is most important for intense walking or jogging in the outdoors and on rough surfaces.
Seats: The seat of jogging strollers should be comfortable for a baby. Most seats are padded and can recline, which is convenient for smaller babies and napping babies.
Folding Mechanism: For travelling purposes, an efficient and easy folding mechanism is crucial with a jogging stroller due to its large size. When the stroller folds, it becomes easy to store at home and in the trunk of a car.
Other factors parents may consider for purchasing a jogging stroller include the size of the stroller, the overall design as well as the cost. With a bit of research and testing at stores, parents can get a better understanding and feel of the different kinds of jogging strollers to make the best choice for the
