Getting Your Infant To Sleep Through The Night

Newborn babies usually sleep about 16-17 hours in a 24-hour period. So why is it that you are having trouble getting your infant to sleep through the night? Well first of all, most babies will not sleep through the night until they’re at least 3 months old. There are several reasons for this. First of all, baby’s stomachs are very small and they’ll get hungry very quickly, especially if you’re breastfeeding. Breast milk is easier to digest than formula milk, so your baby will need to feed more often, especially at the start when you are setting up your feeding routine.
Babies also have far shorter sleep cycles than adults, and also have shorter dream cycles. In general, though, a newborn baby should sleep about 8 or nine hours during the day and 8 hours or so at night. These won’t be in 8-hour cycles, of course. In the beginning, those sleep times will be very short.
As the baby grows older, and reaches about 2 years old, she’ll still be sleeping 13-14 hours, but the amount of daytime naps she takes will reduce month-by-month. By age 2, your baby should be sleeping through the night with a 2-hour nap during the day. Again, this will vary by child. Your baby might need a slightly longer nap or two short naps. At this age though, try to discourage naps too late in the afternoon, as this can make it harder to get them to sleep a few hours later at bedtime.
Once you are getting your infant to sleep through the night, parents can become worried when she begins to awaken in the night again. This usually happens at about 6 months of age and is often considered to be a normal part of development called separation anxiety, when a baby does not understand that separations are only temporary. If night time waking seems to be happening more frequently, or the waking episodes are lasting longer each time, this can become habit-forming behavior. To remedy this, you can teach yourself baby sleep techniques that you can use to help baby sleep at night once again.
If you try a new bedtime routine, but still find your baby is having trouble sleeping through the night, then it’s time to teach yourself baby sleep techniques that you can use on your baby.
I have tried these techniques out on my son, and found them to be very effective indeed. Infact I worked out that I had not had a complete nights sleep in over 6 months before trying these baby sleep techniques out, so when they started to work I was overjoyed!

Baby Breast Feeding – Basic Guidelines You Need to Know About Your Baby’s Breast Feeding

For your baby, breast feeding is the most important thing at a certain age. Ideally you should not ever have to deny the breast feeding to her when directly asking for it. She is quite incapable of understanding why you are suddenly refusing her, and may feel that you are refusing not just the breast feeding, but closeness too. You should not have to suffer the physical discomfort of overfull breasts, either.
Take it slowly and your baby’s breast feeding will usually adapt without problems. If, for example, she now enjoys real food at lunch-time and only sucks cursorily after it, you might decide to offer milk from a cup instead of breast feeding her, and to whiz her straight from her highchair to her buggy for an after-lunch walk by way of distraction.
By the time you get back, it will no longer be a time of day when she is used to nursing and she will probably have forgotten that she did not nurse when it was. On this new regime your breasts will get less stimulation and although you might feel uncomfortably full on the first few occasions, your breasts will adjust and make less milk within two or three days. If you also offer your baby milk from a cup as well as solid food at her other meals, and then let her suck as much as she wants at the end of the meal, she will gradually take less and less when it is breast feeding time. Over a few weeks she will probably reach a point where she is taking only a token few sucks in the morning and a comfort feed at her bedtime. That night-time session will probably be the last your baby will willingly give up, remaining part of your cuddly bedtime ritual for months to come. As long as for your baby, breast feeding is not that important for her to get herself to sleep, your baby may surprise you by abandoning it of her own accord somewhere nearer to a year than 18 months old.
Of course you do not have to leave it to your baby to decide when to give up that last feed. Even if she is perfectly capable of managing without sucking during the day, your baby may not be comfortably ready to do without any at all and may especially miss sucking for comfort at bedtime.

How to make sure baby sleeps well at night

From a very early age it was important that my baby got a goods nights sleep. All babies need between 12 and 15 hours sleep each night. In the early satges they tend to wake every 3 to 4 hours for feeding.
However a good bedtime routine is vital, the earlier you establish it the better.
Since our son was six weeks old, we started quiet time. At six o clock every evening we bathed him, changed him, and fed him his supper.
Then we had some quiet reading or cuddling time. Ny seven o clock he knew it was time for bed. A warm bottle and his teddy followed by a short bed time story and he drifts off to sleep.
Of course it does help having the room, darkened, with a night light too.
For babies there is no difference between night and day and they need to gradually learn that night-time is for sleeping. In fact many new babies may have their most active periods at night and most sleepy periods during the day. If this fits your baby then it isn’t because he associates darkness with being awake, but because during your pregnancy he adopted a rhythm of being lulled to sleep by your activity during the day and being more active when you rested at night.

3 Unusual Ways to Calm a Cranky Baby

These methods for soothing are for babies who don’t care for silence. This works for babies who can sleep through a shootout on TV, yet are startled by a creak from the floorboard. They like it loud.
I’ve got a baby with just that personality. In some ways it’s great. Turn on the TV, turn on the radio, no worries about breaking the snooze. But it’s not so great at night, when we grown folks like it quiet in the house so WE can sleep.
So here are three ways to compromise with your little one. Two methods that are good for day and one that everyone can agree on at night.
1. The blender. Baby’s wailing. Sounds like a great time for a smoothie! As soon as we hit the blend button, the crying stops and serenity follows. We don’t question it, we just make a whole lot more smoothies these days.
2. The vacuum. Is it the deafening hum? Or does she just like a clean house? I dunno, but she likes it. This one is a good one to use to get your husband to vacuum cause he’ll do anything (even housework) if it means the baby will hush.
OK, here’s your night time compromise.
3. A white noise machine. You know, one of those things that makes the sound of the ocean, or rain, or a bubbling stream. This one seems to be enough noise for the baby but light enough for adults to sleep to. This one can make for interesting background music to your dreams too.
Anyway, there’s no real rhyme or reason to it. These worked for us, but you may find that your child is partial to the dishwasher or the blow dryer. Play around with it and see what works for you.
