What Is The Difference Between Your Regular Bra And A Breastfeeding Bra?
Posted by in Pregnancy on January 28th, 2010
Pregnancy and breastfeeding lingerie – was it something you thought about when you first discovered you were pregnant? The list of things you need in preparation for the arrival of your baby, be it the first or not, always seems a little daunting. The good news is there are now breastfeeding bras, which make at least that side of things a little easier. In fact, a lot easier if you choose well!
Why can’t I use my regular bra?
Pregnancy is a time of many changes, both physical and emotional. I believe that if you can ensure the physical aspects are as pleasurable as possible, the emotional ones are easier to cope with. Your body does change. Your breasts become fuller at the end of your first trimester in preparation for breastfeeding. Wearing a well fitted, supportive and yet gorgeous breastfeeding bra is very important. The differences from your regular bra are in both the construction, the shape, fabrics and ability to cater for size fluctuation. Look for cotton lining for breathability and no chafing, six rows of eyes at the back, supportive, comfortable and adjustable straps, microfibre fabrics and soft laces and detailing which won’t irritate, but will enhance! Most maternity bras are suitable for pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Can I get away with wearing my regular bra?
No. You will probably notice an increase in your bust size at the end of the first trimester. If you wear a larger cup size, you may have a bra with underwire. This is not recommended in breastfeeding bras. The milk ducts can become blocked both during pregnancy and after when you begin to settle in to your breast feeding routine. A lot of improvements have been made to maternity lingerie, which includes the amount of support now possible in non underwired breastfeeding bras. If you have a smaller bust with no underwire in your regular lingerie, you will be needing the support of a beautifully designed and constructed breastfeeding bra as your breasts become fuller.
How many will I need?
On average women buy two to three maternity bras, one at the end of the first trimester and again at the end of the third trimester in preparation for breastfeeding. Regular bras do not cope with the amount of washing and stretching through size fluctuation. In addition is the need for maternity clips to allow ease of feeding. Choose a bra with one-handed maternity clips – you might not always have two free!
Can I still find maternity lingerie which will make me feel gorgeous?
Yes! Just because you’re pregnant or breastfeeding does not mean you have to wear dull, beige and un-flattering lingerie! In the past pregnancy and breastfeeding lingerie was an extension of mainstream lingerie brands. These days there are companies specialising wholly on maternity lingerie alone. Some even offer affordable, chic stylish designer collections. These days the choices are diverse and cater for all facets of a woman and her desires. Pregnancy and breastfeeding are the most feminine times in your life – revel in it and wear what suits your mood, your figure and your needs.

Maternity Lingerie and Why You Need It During Pregnancy and After

The benefits of wearing well fitted, expertly designed maternity lingerie are significant. Comfort, size fluctuation, the ability to un-clasp the fastenings one-handed, no underwire to restrict milk flow and cause conditions such as mastitis are all issues to be considered.
If you’re pregnant for the first time, or if you had an average experience in previous pregnancies with your maternity lingerie, don’t despair – things have progressed! I was unimpressed with the ranges available during the first of my three pregnancies – everything seemed to be black, white or beige, the pregnancy and nursing bras had clumsy fastenings and uncomfortable linings, fabrics were not of the standard I was used to. Thankfully this is no longer the case.
Your body undergoes a myriad of changes during pregnancy, birth and after your baby is born. The maternity lingerie you choose must be able to cater for these changes. And don’t forget it must make you feel gorgeous too. This is a truly feminine time in your life – revel in it! Just as when you buy your regular lingerie you can also buy feminine and fabulous underwear and nightwear.
People generally make three maternity bra purchases during their pregnancy. You will go up in size and this will vary from person to person, but new bras are something you will need to buy. Around the end of your first trimester you will probably notice an increase in your bust measurement. This is the time to go to a professional bra fitter who will expertly identify the size which is correct for you. Make sure you try full and 3/4 cup styles, A-sling and side sling support to ensure your maternity lingerie gives you good support and shape. Yes, this can be achieved without the use of underwire! Matching briefs and French knickers are an ideal way to complete the set and are specifically designed to sit under your “baby bump”.
From early in your pregnancy, your body may also experience temperature variations, particularly at night when you are trying to sleep. Maternity lingerie also encompasses sleepwear which can be worn during pregnancy and because of the shelf support and one-handed maternity clips, are very convenient when the baby arrives and you will probably be feeding regularly at night.
Exquisite and feminine lingerie is still achievable in comfortable, breathable and supportive fabrics. Soft cotton linings and hidden, or no seams, is particularly important for nipples which may become tender during those early days of feeding your newborn. Strong elastene and adjustable back fasteners are important to allow for growth and at around six or seven months, or if you feel any restriction, make sure you are re-fitted. Your bust will increase in size during the early weeks of feeding and settle back down again once a routine is established so the lingerie you buy near the end of your pregnancy will be useable once your baby is born.
Being ready for the arrival of your baby with a newly fitted maternity bra makes life a lot easier, a lot more comfortable and if you choose gorgeous, sexy pregnancy and nursing lingerie, you will feel feminine and fabulous.

What is Designer Maternity Wear and Why Should I Buy It?
Posted by in Pregnancy on September 22nd, 2009
Just because you’re pregnant doesn’t mean you have to resort to brown and boring maternity wear! Maternity lingerie now comes in a variety of sophisticated and stylish designs, for all types of women.
What you wear expresses your femininity and being pregnant is one of the most feminine, sensual times in your life. Women know this! Designer maternity wear provides you with the ability to feel feminine and glamorous at a time when you just sometimes don’t. When I needed to buy new lingerie during my first pregnancy, I searched high and low and could only find traditional, uninspiring maternity ranges. I was used to gorgeous designer lingerie and the thought of wearing unattractive pieces during my pregnancy and beyond filled me – and my husband – with horror. So, I started my own maternity lingerie company.
Designer maternity lingerie provides you with the fit, comfort, practicalities and variety of sizing that you need during your pregnancy. It also makes you feel ravishing! I was my very own case study and soon realised there were a lot of women like me. Lingerie can be gorgeous and sensual as well as having a practical aspect. This applies to maternity lingerie as well and is typified by the use of gorgeous colours and fabrics, soft cotton, breathable linings and clever seam construction to ensure no rubbing or chafing. Maternity does not mean matronly!
As important as underwear is maternity sleepwear. Maternity clips are easy to use with one hand and again, luxurious fabrics are used – those precious hours of sleep need to be perfect and your awake time kept to a minimum.
When to indulge in your new designer maternity wear is a question we are often asked. You will become uncomfortable in your regular lingerie as your body changes and grows – this is usually around the three to four month stage. I recommend you visit a professional bra fitter. Depending on the development of your bust you should be fitted again around the seven month stage, but if you ever feel constricted by your garments, go for another fitting. Designer garments are as wearable and comfortable as any lingerie. It is a fact that nearly 80% of Australian women wear the wrong size maternity bra – alarming, but true. Make sure you get well fitted for your maternity wear and for the changes you will go through after the arrival of your precious wee person. A well fitted bra will give you good bust shape, flattering profile and help with your posture – not to mention the fact you will feel great about yourself.
While designer wear has been seen as an exclusive, we have broken down those barriers and made sophisticated and stylish maternity wear achievable for as many women as possible.

What Are the Features of a Designer Maternity Bra and How Should I Choose One?

In what is a wonderfully exciting time full of lots of changes to your body and anticipation at the coming event, there are some less exciting aspects to pregnancy. Some can be avoided! I dreaded the necessity of wearing a dull maternity bra when my bust increased at around the end of the first trimester. However I did finally have the opportunity to wear gorgeous, feminine maternity bras which made all the difference – and my body thanked me for it too!
Designer maternity bras do look gorgeous, they use luxurious fabrics, are fashion forward and feminine but above all afford your body the comfort and room for expansion which will be necessary. Too many people just drag their old, stretched bras from the back of their drawers to get them through their pregnancy. I recommend a visit to a professional bra fitter – your pregnancy lingerie should be something you purchase as soon as you notice a change in comfort and fit with your regular lingerie. It will take you beyond the birth of your baby if you buy well.
Maternity bras typically have openings at the top of the cup to allow for easy opening at feed times. Make sure the bra you choose has an easy to open maternity clip and that you can carry out this manoeuvre one handed. Making the choice to wear pregnancy lingerie during your pregnancy means you will be provided with excellent support and flexibility – your bust does increase and sometimes significantly. Depending on the development of your bust size you should be fitted again at approximately seven months, however if you feel your bra is restrictive in any way, make sure you get checked straight away.
Your maternity bra should give you the same shape and bust profile of a well fitted regular bra. The designer aspect of it means that you will feel fabulous and that the bra is expertly designed. New Zealand maternity lingerie designer Cassie Sweden is adamant maternity bras should not have underwires. “Underwires can restrict the growth and changes in breast size and shape during pregnancy and milk flow during breast feeding, which may in turn cause conditions such as mastitis.” Having personally experienced the difference in wearing gorgeous, well designed maternity bras, I would certainly not go back.
There are a number of important considerations in choosing a maternity bra. Make sure it is lined with soft cotton and with seams constructed to ensure no rubbing or chafing. The back panels of the bra should incorporate strong power elastane for extra support. Wider straps and back adjusters ensure superior fits for larger sizes. Multiple rows of eyes at the back – six would be best – provides for expansion in the diaphragm.
And don’t forget the designer element when you’re making your choice! Fabrics and laces which are carefully chosen to provide maximum support and comfort for your maternity bra, should also be complemented by exquisite matching underwear. I know you will feel feminine and sophisticated when you too wear this luxurious lingerie.

Sexy Maternity Lingerie and Why Everyone Needs It
Posted by in Pregnancy on July 27th, 2009
Just because your lingerie is “everyday” underwear, doesn’t mean to say it can’t be stylish and sophisticated – and sexy. And just because you’re pregnant doesn’t mean to say you too can’t feel desirable. Pregnancy is possibly one of the most feminine times in your life – revel in it and celebrate it by wearing sexy maternity lingerie.
I imagine you thought the words camisole, G-string, French knickers and bikini were lost to you during your pregnancy? Maybe it didn’t occur to you that you could feel desirable and desired, that your lingerie could inspire romance. You are not alone but there is a solution and it is as close as your lingerie or online store. I wanted to continue wearing the lingerie I was used to during my three pregnancies and have the right level of support from a bra, pants and maternity nightwear. This lead to a lot of research on my part about maternity lingerie and I listened to a lot of other women who felt the same way.
A pregnant body is a sexy body – fertile and fabulous. Testament to this are the daily media reports we see of celebrities shouting to the world about how fantastic they feel and look while they are pregnant – and how their partners desire them. Lingerie need not be overtly provocative however. You may prefer the romantic undertones of luxurious nighties, camisoles that skim over your skin, touches of satin and lace which enhance your shape.
Sexy lingerie does offer well designed support and practicality for your changing body, while looking exquisite. Bras feature A-frame support and power elastane, wider shoulder straps and cotton lining, no-fuss maternity clips and extra eyes for expansion are discreetly incorporated. Gone are the days when maternity pants mean matronly. I personally prefer the low profile designs which give you a smooth line and you can choose from bikini, G-string, French knickers with loose or form fitting sides, ruching and lace or satin detailing. Maternity sleepwear offers you a choice too while always the practical solutions for nights when you need help to feel comfortable, or to feed with the least fuss possible. Sensual lingerie in soft cottons and silky microfibres look and feel ravishing against your skin. Soft pleats and delicate lace afford discreet breast-feeding for the new mother. Desirable and luxurious nighties offer an expression of sensuality for both you and your partner.
Sexy maternity lingerie can be worn for one off occasions or for your entire pregnancy, such is the level of design these days. As with your regular lingerie, make sure you are fitted properly by a professional bra fitter and get refitted if you experience any discomfort down the track.
