What is Designer Maternity Wear and Why Should I Buy It?

Just because you’re pregnant doesn’t mean you have to resort to brown and boring maternity wear! Maternity lingerie now comes in a variety of sophisticated and stylish designs, for all types of women.

What you wear expresses your femininity and being pregnant is one of the most feminine, sensual times in your life. Women know this! Designer maternity wear provides you with the ability to feel feminine and glamorous at a time when you just sometimes don’t. When I needed to buy new lingerie during my first pregnancy, I searched high and low and could only find traditional, uninspiring maternity ranges. I was used to gorgeous designer lingerie and the thought of wearing unattractive pieces during my pregnancy and beyond filled me – and my husband – with horror. So, I started my own maternity lingerie company.

Designer maternity lingerie provides you with the fit, comfort, practicalities and variety of sizing that you need during your pregnancy. It also makes you feel ravishing! I was my very own case study and soon realised there were a lot of women like me. Lingerie can be gorgeous and sensual as well as having a practical aspect. This applies to maternity lingerie as well and is typified by the use of gorgeous colours and fabrics, soft cotton, breathable linings and clever seam construction to ensure no rubbing or chafing. Maternity does not mean matronly!

As important as underwear is maternity sleepwear. Maternity clips are easy to use with one hand and again, luxurious fabrics are used – those precious hours of sleep need to be perfect and your awake time kept to a minimum.

When to indulge in your new designer maternity wear is a question we are often asked. You will become uncomfortable in your regular lingerie as your body changes and grows – this is usually around the three to four month stage. I recommend you visit a professional bra fitter. Depending on the development of your bust you should be fitted again around the seven month stage, but if you ever feel constricted by your garments, go for another fitting. Designer garments are as wearable and comfortable as any lingerie. It is a fact that nearly 80% of Australian women wear the wrong size maternity bra – alarming, but true. Make sure you get well fitted for your maternity wear and for the changes you will go through after the arrival of your precious wee person. A well fitted bra will give you good bust shape, flattering profile and help with your posture – not to mention the fact you will feel great about yourself.

While designer wear has been seen as an exclusive, we have broken down those barriers and made sophisticated and stylish maternity wear achievable for as many women as possible.

It was the birth of Lisa’s first child that inspired her with the belief young mothers deserved a better choice than the unexciting maternity lingerie offered by mainstream brands and so HOTmilk Lingerie too was born. http://www.hotmilklingerie.co.nz/

What Are the Features of a Designer Maternity Bra and How Should I Choose One?

In what is a wonderfully exciting time full of lots of changes to your body and anticipation at the coming event, there are some less exciting aspects to pregnancy. Some can be avoided! I dreaded the necessity of wearing a dull maternity bra when my bust increased at around the end of the first trimester. However I did finally have the opportunity to wear gorgeous, feminine maternity bras which made all the difference – and my body thanked me for it too!

Designer maternity bras do look gorgeous, they use luxurious fabrics, are fashion forward and feminine but above all afford your body the comfort and room for expansion which will be necessary. Too many people just drag their old, stretched bras from the back of their drawers to get them through their pregnancy. I recommend a visit to a professional bra fitter – your pregnancy lingerie should be something you purchase as soon as you notice a change in comfort and fit with your regular lingerie. It will take you beyond the birth of your baby if you buy well.

Maternity bras typically have openings at the top of the cup to allow for easy opening at feed times. Make sure the bra you choose has an easy to open maternity clip and that you can carry out this manoeuvre one handed. Making the choice to wear pregnancy lingerie during your pregnancy means you will be provided with excellent support and flexibility – your bust does increase and sometimes significantly. Depending on the development of your bust size you should be fitted again at approximately seven months, however if you feel your bra is restrictive in any way, make sure you get checked straight away.

Your maternity bra should give you the same shape and bust profile of a well fitted regular bra. The designer aspect of it means that you will feel fabulous and that the bra is expertly designed. New Zealand maternity lingerie designer Cassie Sweden is adamant maternity bras should not have underwires. “Underwires can restrict the growth and changes in breast size and shape during pregnancy and milk flow during breast feeding, which may in turn cause conditions such as mastitis.” Having personally experienced the difference in wearing gorgeous, well designed maternity bras, I would certainly not go back.

There are a number of important considerations in choosing a maternity bra. Make sure it is lined with soft cotton and with seams constructed to ensure no rubbing or chafing. The back panels of the bra should incorporate strong power elastane for extra support. Wider straps and back adjusters ensure superior fits for larger sizes. Multiple rows of eyes at the back – six would be best – provides for expansion in the diaphragm.

And don’t forget the designer element when you’re making your choice! Fabrics and laces which are carefully chosen to provide maximum support and comfort for your maternity bra, should also be complemented by exquisite matching underwear. I know you will feel feminine and sophisticated when you too wear this luxurious lingerie.

HOTmilk Lingerie is a deliciously decadent designer maternity wear collection designed to make women feel confident and sexy during the many challenges of motherhood. The HOTmilk story began in 2006 when New Zealand based cofounder Lisa Ebbing became pregnant with her first child.
