Bassinets – A Nursery Consideration
Posted by in Babies on February 12th, 2010
By now you are probably well into your nursery design and preparation and don’t need another item to consider but I am now offering you some information on baby bassinets that hopefully you will consider. I apologize if I’m creating havoc in your plans!
Other than feeding and of course all the new attention by family and friends most of a new infants time is spent sleeping. Bassinets can be a very attractive piece of furniture for your baby to snooze away the day and ideally most of the night. You may choose from among oval bassinets, round bassinets, or rocking bassinets, just to name a few.
Most will have some type of canopy to help shade the interior from any harsh light. The canopy may be height adjustable. They may or may not include a bumper pad for the perimeter. If they do be sure that the pad can be attached to the framework so it stays in place.
Of course the mattress pad should be one that provides adequate support without be overly hard. The mattress pad should conform to certain safety standards. Fitted sheets are also a must for the bassinet. Don’t use a crib sheet since they are too large and the baby may become wrapped in the sheet.
Caster wheels can be a convenient item on your bassinet to wheel it into another room if desired. Please do not move the bassinet with the baby in it. Some bassinets have caster wheels that flip up out of the way thus converting the bassinet to a rocking cradle.
I leave to last the important part as far as I’m concerned – safety. If the bassinet you are considering is somewhat shaky, then forget it. If the bassinet seems to have metal, wood, wicker, plastic or whatever protrusions that seem unsafe, then forget it. You may find information on recalled bassinets at the site of the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission.
And finally the accepted guideline for the use of bassinets in general is that if your baby is more than 20 pounds, or 3-4 months old, or sits up unassisted, pushes up, or rolls over then it is time to graduate to a crib. Please read and comply with the bassinet that you choose.
I hope this short article has provided some insight for you and helps you in your nursery selection.

Breastfeeding While Pregnant
Posted by in Babies on February 2nd, 2010
Reasons to Stop A few reasons you might want to stop breastfeeding may be if you are feeling constantly drained of energy. Or maybe your child has started to bite. Sometimes your milk will just dry up, this is your body’s way of telling you that it has had enough and to take a break. Mastitis could play a big role in making you stop immediately as well. Mastitis is an infection in the breast when it isn’t expressed enough and gets engorged.
Stopping or Weaning If you do plan on stopping because you are pregnant, make sure it is for the right reasons. If your child has reached a certain age, it might be best. But never just yank it away from them. Your child could wonder why it is being taken away. Wonder if they had done something or become discouraged about the new baby coming. Some children decide to wean themselves, which is a big help to you and you won’t feel so guilty about it. You can choose to do it cold turkey, or slowly wean him/her off. Cold turkey can have some bad results. Try limiting his/her feeding times to certain hours and gradually as time passes take away more. Your child will quickly stop on his/her own and it won’t be a traumatic event.
Continuing to Feed If you do plan on continuing to breastfeed while you are pregnant, talk with your doctor about it. Not all the time will the doctor agree with your decision. Sometimes he/she may see something in your health that you don’t. Listen carefully and find out if it is a health reason or simply his/her own belief. If it is the doctors belief, you can always seek out one that agrees with you. Being pregnant is hard enough at times, knowing you have someone in your corner will only relieve the stress. Don’t be surprised if your family and friends want to say something about it and they will probably give you all kind of advice on how to stop and what they’ve read. Nicely explain to them it is your decision and you”ll do what you think is best for your children. Try finding a support group in your area so you have someone to vent to or talk about these issues. Check out if there is a La Leche League near you or online that you can join.
Remember that as long as you take proper care of yourself and your body, you”ll be able to safely breastfeed while pregnant. breastfeeding pillow pattern you can search in our advertiser blog

Learning the Basics of Shopping for Baby Clothes
Posted by in Babies on January 6th, 2010
One of the most exciting things for parents-to-be is the preparation for the coming of their bundle of joy. Just as enthusiastic are friends and family who tend to give gifts even months before the baby is even born. As a consequence, the number of baby clothes for infants pile up and before you know it, the baby no longer needs them. Baby’s growth is a swift stage which makes it quite challenging for parents to sustain the clothing needs. And of course, family and friends are not always there to provide. Furthermore, parents do not always have the ready cash to purchase baby items which are ‘disposable’ by nature.
So when it comes to purchasing baby items especially clothes, one must think of the most advantageous in terms of durability and functionality. Another question that one must answer is the protective features of these items. After all, we are doing this for our vulnerable precious ones.
As the shopping begins, it is a must to think about of the primary and most important factors to consider – SAFETY! This should always be at the top of the list and everything doubt dawns on you, then it is worth dropping immediately. Safety comes from two different viewpoints. First is the kind of the flame retardant material the clothes you are eyeing on is made of. Such material should always appear on the tag. If not, then disregard it immediately as it is not worth risking your baby’s welfare. The other important feature is the presence of buttons, elastics and buttons. These materials could injure babies. Buttons may also get sucked and swallowed by babies. They also possess choking hazards which is a common accident involving babies. Elastic bands should be removed as they are just as hazardous. The risks are much higher especially when babies are left unattended.
Baby’s comfort is also of prime importance. More often than not, cotton is the most recommended kind of fabric. This fabric has a natural supple feel on babies’ skin which makes them very comfortable. One drawback of using cotton is its tendency to shrink after being washed several times and so it is always wise to purchase baby clothes that are bigger in size. This way, you can reuse the clothes for a long time. Another option is to purchase clothes made from both cotton and polyester. They may not be as soft and supple as clothes made form purely cotton, they don’t shrink and they look good for a long time.
Money is also a factor to consider. One way or another, as parents, you need to find other ways to purchase clothes without putting a strain on your finances. This can be achieved by paying a visit to places where used clothes are available. This is also one of my strategies. Shopping on-line for used clothes helps me get hold of good clothes without hurting my pocket. Convenience is also an important factor to consider. Babies need to change constantly and we also want to do that conveniently, don’t we?

How To Plan The Perfect Baby Shower
Posted by in Babies on December 19th, 2009
Even the most inexperienced host can plan the perfect baby shower – all it takes is a little thought and organization.
In a moment of spontaneity you agreed to throw a shower for a special mom-to-be, but now you are questioning your sanity, tossing and turning at night wondering how you will ever pull it off. Well, there is no need to panic! By using a simple planning guide or checklist, giving yourself plenty of time to prepare, and enlisting the help of others, you can host an event that is both memorable and enjoyable.
Plan the Guest List: Determining how many people you need or want to invite will influence many other decisions such as location and menu. Will your baby shower be a small, intimate gathering of close friends or will it be a larger affair including family, coworkers, and neighborhood acquaintances? In some cases, you may want to check with the grandmothers-to-be or other friends to make sure no one is left out.
Choose a date, time, and location: Will the shower be before or after the baby is born? While many moms-to-be appreciate getting some of the necessities ahead of time, hosting a party after the baby is born is a great way to introduce the new bundle of joy to family and friends. If you choose to plan your shower before the baby is born, remember to select a day that is at least two months prior to the due date to avoid the possibility of early labor. If you prefer to wait until after baby arrives, remember to ask the new mom what time of day is best. Of course, the size of the guest list will determine the location. You can host the party in your own home, a tea room, restaurant, or choose to rent a larger facility such as a banquet hall or community center.
Choose a theme: When you want to plan the perfect baby shower, choosing a theme will give your event that unique and personal touch, and have guests believing that you are a party expert. You could choose something as simple as following the same color scheme as the nursery, or a more elaborate theme such as an around-the-clock shower or a tea party. You may wish to choose a Mother Goose or Fairy Tale theme and ask each guest to bring a book for the new baby; or possibly incorporate a Toy Story theme where everyone brings a new toy. Once you have determined a theme, choosing decorations and invitations will be much easier.
Invitations: It only takes a few minutes at the computer to find the perfect baby shower invitation to match any theme. If time or computer skills are an issue, most local department stores carry a large selection of party invitations at reasonable prices. Along with date, time, and location, remember to include any specifics such as baby’s gender (if known), gift registries, party theme, and method of RSVP. You should also decide on the most efficient way to manage replies – whether by mail, email, or phone – and keep a list of the responses received.
Decorations: Again, for the professional look, have decorations follow a specific color scheme or theme. If you are creative, you could make centerpieces and balloon bouquets, or for the less artistic, you could visit a local party store and purchase everything you need. If you choose a restaurant or tea room as your location, remember to check with management to find out what they will allow you to bring or what they are able to provide. To save money and accomplish two jobs at once, choose decorations that can also be used as party favors and thank you gifts, such as chocolate bouquets, fresh cut flowers, candle holders, or picture frames.
Games: Games are a vital part of any shower because they help people relax and encourage socializing. There are many options to choose from such as printable games, physically active games, group activities, and individual challenges and quizzes; however, venue and party size will be major considerations when making your selections. Keep prizes simple by using easy to find items like baby-shaped candy, soap, small bottles of hand lotion, or chocolate.
Menu: Perhaps the most stressful part of planning any party is deciding on the menu. The size of the party, the time of day, and the atmosphere you wish to create are important factors to consider when deciding on what food to serve. Do you want a brunch with soufflés and fruit, an afternoon tea with fancy sandwiches and pastries, a full course sit down meal, or a buffet of finger foods? Will guests be able to sit at tables or will they be balancing plates on their knees? If you will be preparing all of the food yourself, try to choose items that can be made ahead of time so that you know everything is in order before the guests arrive and you can focus on playing host/hostess. If you will be ordering some of the menu in, remember to order well ahead of time so you can relax, knowing that the right food will arrive at the right time.
Even if you are taking your first hesitant party planning step and feel completely overwhelmed, using these simple ideas to help plan the perfect baby shower will make the experience less stressful and leave guests raving about your hosting skills.

Safe and Healthy Pregnancy Tips: How To Choose An Obgyn
Posted by in Pregnancy on November 1st, 2009
After you find out that you’re pregnant, the next thing that you do is make an obgyn appointment. However, before heading off to the clinic or hospital nearest you, there are a few important things to keep in mind. In this article, we will share with you some helpful tips on how to choose an obgyn which satisfies your needs all the time.
Ask around. – As mentioned, before starting the selection process, ask around. Ask your friends, colleagues and relatives for referrals. Have they had a great experience during their pregnancy? If so, ask for a referral. You may also resort to online websites. However, instead of going to chatrooms or online reviews, go to practice websites instead and find out if the doctor is Board Certified.
Make an appointment – After choosing potential obgyns, the next thing you can do is make an appointment. Some doctors would not see patients until they reach the 12th week. Take this is a first sign. Instead of settling with the doctor, find another who is willing to see you even when you’re only on your sixth week. Finding an OB who is available to see you as often as you want is a good sign. It can also help prevent miscarriage.
The choice for epidural – Some women want to give birth on epidural. If you are one of them, you need to conduct a quick research and find out if the decision is right for you. Take note as well that the risks of women who have an epidural and a C-section is high. Just keep in mind that whatever your prenatal and labor decisions are, your partner should be well-informed and kept aware of everything happening. You may also choose midwife for extra help and encouragement when you go on labor.
Investigate – Investigation is a very important aspect of your obgyn selection. After you have narrowed down your choices, take time to investigate and research on your own. When investigating, you may use the following steps:
l Ask your family and friends about their doctors. Ask about their entire experience. Referrals from other people are a good and reliable way in helping you find a good obstetrician.
l If you have a friend who works in a hospital or clinic, feel free to give them a call. You may also speak with an office nurse who may be able to give you scoop on factors like how competent the doctor is, how clean the clinic is, how friendly the nurses are and the like. Talking to a hospital’s head nurse will probably give you the fairest judgment since she has most likely seen the doctor at his best and worse times.
l Checking with the state’s medical board will help you find out about red flags. You can check this information either by phone or online.
l Aside from getting as much information about your doctor, researching about the hospital should never be forgotten. Sometimes, we love the doctor but we hate the hospital where they work.
To choose the best obgyn, you need to stay focused. Yes, getting pregnant comes with a wide range of huge responsibilities and in order for you to get through all these obligations, a focused, disciplined and calm personality will surely help you go a long way.
You can find helpful information about how to choose midwife and everything you need to know about how to choose a obgyn at Aha! Baby.

Women Donate Eggs at Fertility Clinic
Posted by in Pregnancy on September 27th, 2009
Egg donation is restricted to women between the ages of eighteen to twenty nine. There are strict rules and regulations behind donations. There are screenings and age limits, physical tested and intimate details of family health issues, intelligence and mental health that must be disclosed. There are several choices of donations. There are open donations where pictures are exchanged along with possible meetings between the donor and the recipient. The donor has no legal control over the eggs after they are extracted and donated. There are no legal limitations to the amount of eggs that a donor can give however; clinics usually have a six donation limit.
There are fertility drugs that are given to increase fertility. These drugs can cause symptoms such as fatigue, vomiting, weight gain, and insomnia as well as more serious complications such as ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. This syndrome is the over production of eggs which can cause swelling of the ovaries and the leaking of fluid into the abdomen. About fifty injections of medication can be expected per donation cycle. This is about a three week period of time. During the process intercourse is prohibited and physician supervision is required.
The donor may request to know if a pregnancy was achieved but no further info is usually disclosed. Education is usually a must as potential parents are looking for donors with high academic testing scores and various tests may be requested such as SAT, ACR, GMAT. High school diploma is commonly required and an exceptional donor price is allowed for those with college educations.
This process is long, physically challenging and emotionally. The complete screening and testing and extraction process can be as long as twelve weeks. Once all the screenings and tests take place you are placed on a donors list and are then able to be chosen by a potential recipient. Many donor’s keep this a secret from family and friends. You may or may not even have a match with a potential recipient.
What are the reasons behind the choice to donate eggs for fertilization and placement into another woman’s womb? The most common reason is financial gain. All expenses such as travel, wages lost and even child care costs will be covered. The donor is able to quote their own price however the common first donation price is around 4,000. The price can be as high as 10,000. The donor receives the payment after the retrieval of the egg. The donation is not based on a pregnancy instead; it is based on retrieval of the egg. Egg donations have risen 25 to 100 percent since the economic crisis and recession in the US and abroad.
