Do’s and Dont’s When You’re Trying to Conceive

What an exciting time of your life – trying to conceive a child. There are often questions about what you should do to prepare for pregnancy and how you can increase your chances of conceiving. Here is a brief summary of some “do’s and don’ts.”
Do’s
Do improve your nutrition – getting all the vital nutrients in your diet will enhance your health and greatly improve your chances of conception.
Do eat good fats, including full-fat dairy – recent research is showing that women who enjoy full fat dairy products and other healthy fats have higher conception rates than those who follow a low-fat diet. Get your dairy products from a trusted source, preferably a farm where the cattle graze on grass.
Do take beneficial supplements – There are some supplements that can benefit you as you’re trying to get pregnant. Fish oils, Vitamin D, and a prenatal vitamin. Studies are showing that it’s better to get folic acid in its natural form, folate, so pick a prenatal vitamin with food-based ingredients.
Do get outside and get moving – Spend some time out in the fresh air and sunshine each day. This improves not just your health but your mood. Walk, swim, or get in some other form of movement. This gets your blood circulating and brings large amounts of fresh oxygen into your lungs. Both of these enhance your fertility and help you prepare for pregnancy.

Don’ts

Also stop any illegal drugs and over-the-counter drugs. Consult with your doctor and decide what the best choices are for prescription drugs.
Don’t have a negative attitude – Even if you’re not getting pregnant as soon as you start trying to conceive, keep a positive attitude. It is overwhelmingly likely that you will get pregnant. But a jealous or negative attitude towards pregnant women or women with babies creates negative energy and bad health in you. Stay upbeat and take steps to improve your chances of conceiving.
Don’t delay in having basic tests run – if you haven’t conceived after 6 months or so and you feel it would help, have your doctor run some basic tests. A good starting place is a sperm analysis for the man. It’s non-invasive and easy. Basic tests will most likely let you both know that everything is “ok” and that you can (and will!) conceive.

Dealing With Pregnancy Heartburn

Ligaments which are responsible in keeping the Lower esophageal Sphincter or LES closed are softened due to increased levels of hormones during pregnancy. This causes the LES to relax while food and stomach acids reflux back to the esophagus and larynx. How To Get Pregnant: Fertility Tips

If you are wondering how to get pregnant, follow these tips to maximize your opportunity for conception!
These tips work mainly for those who are generally healthy and have no problems with their fertility. However, if there are any underlying fertility issues (such as not ovulating), this needs to be addressed by a specialist. This is especially true if you have been trying to conceive for more than 12-18 months.
How To Get Pregnant: Fertility Tips For Mommy-To-Be
- The first thing you need to figure out when trying to get pregnant is when you ovulate. This is the most important thing you can do to maximize your chances of getting pregnant. This can be done by charting your basal body temperature and cervical mucous from month to month, or using ovulation predictor kits;
- Keep your cervical mucous optimal for the sperm to travel and live in for as long as possible. To do this, try to limit milk/dairy products, which will thicken the mucous. Make sure you drink at least 2L of water a day, which should also help;
A GREAT TIP on increasing the quality of cervical mucous: take plain Robitussin cough syrup every day starting somewhere between Day 8 and 10 (depending on the length of your cycle and approximately when you ovulate). Robitussin will thin out your body’s mucous, including cervical mucous, which is the optimal environment for sperm to travel and live in. Just make sure the bottle says “Guaifenesin” or “expectorant”, and NOT “anti-histamine” or “DM”. Take this BEFORE you have sex, preferably a few hours before to give the syrup time to work it’s magic. At the same time, test with ovulation predictor kits every day starting on Day 8 of your cycle. As soon as you get a positive result from the OPK, stop taking the Robitussin.
- Do not have sexual intercourse every day. You will make yourself tired and sore, and will dry out your cervical mucous. You will also not give your partner’s sperm enough time to build back up by releasing it too often. Instead, have sex every OTHER day, until you get a positive result on your OPK – then you should have sex for 3 straight days just in case. The sperm should already be in your body by the time the egg is released for optimal chances of conception;
- At the risk of sounding ridiculous, try staying flat on your back for a few minutes after sex. This will prevent gravity from drawing the semen away from your cervix. Try even putting a pillow under your hips.
How To Get Pregnant: Fertility Tips For Daddy-To-Be
- Do not allow more than 8-10 days to pass before ejaculating. Regular ejaculation will keep the sperm fresh, and will reduce the risk of the sperm becoming old and less fertile;
- Stay away from alcohol, or at least limit your intake, since excessive alcohol consumption has been associated with male impotence;
- Try to get yourself at an optimal body weight. Being underweight or overweight can actually contribute to a reduced sperm count;
- Stop smoking. Although cigarettes don’t actually reduce sperm count, they do damage the sperm’s DNA, which can lead to birth defects;
- Try not to wear clothing or underwear that is too tight. The excess heat can actually kill sperm, so try to keep it cool “down there”!
- Steer clear from certain medications that may cause infertility. Medications such as: anti-diarreal medications, certain antibiotics, anabolic steroids and anti-fungal medications should be avoided. If you are using any of these substances, find out more from your doctor about their affects on male fertility;
- Limit your caffeine intake. Caffeine in excess can negatively affect sperm.

How to Control Weight Gain during Pregnancy

It’s a fact that women gain weight during pregnancy. You are growing another human being who, in the end, usually weight anywhere from six to nine pounds when he or she is born. The saying “eating for two” is a myth. You only really need to eat a few hundred more calories than you did before you were pregnant.
Most women who have an average weight will should gain 25-30 pounds when they are pregnant. Where does all that weight go? Well, the baby weighs about eight pounds and the placenta and amniotic fluid weigh about 4 pounds. We are up to 12 pounds. The breasts get bigger and the fat stored for breastfeeding and delivery equal to about seven pounds. Experts say women generally gain two to four pounds during their first trimester and one pound a week through your second and third trimesters. Eating a healthy diet is a great way to not gain more weight than is necessary. Eat smaller meals more frequently throughout the day. It is important to eat just as healthy as you did before you became pregnant. Eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains. Choose low-fat dairy products and control those cravings for sweet snacks and other high calorie foods. Exercising is another great way to control the weight gain. Walking and swimming are good low-impact exercises to do while you are pregnant. Be sure to talk with your doctor about starting an exercise routine, so nothing goes wrong.
Often weight gain during pregnancy scares many women and they try to lose the weight. This is not safe. Both mother and baby need certain nutrients to stay healthy.
