Cesarean Section Recovery – Exercises After A Cesarean section FAQs

I know, I know, you’ve just had major abdominal surgery, you’ve got a new baby to contend with and you really don’t have the energy to do anything right? So how come there is this nagging voice in the background urging you to get off your butt and start getting back in shape? After all, the celebs can do it – sometimes it looks like they’ve resumed their fab figures within hours of giving birth! Even Mandy from down the road looks great and she had her c section after you…what gives?

The most important thing when it comes to exercising after a cesarean section is that you do the right type of exercise.

So that involves sit-ups and curl-ups and plenty of fat burning cardio?
Absolutely not!
Because your stomach muscles are an essential part of your skeletal support going straight into sit-ups and high impact sports in a bid to regain your figure will actually only gain you more pain and cause you a much longer recovery.

Why is that?
The muscles and ligaments are not just recovering from the surgery, but also from the pregnancy. These muscles also work with your back muscles to support your spine. By doing too much too soon is a sure fire way to strain and tear all your muscles and ligaments which will put your recovery back by weeks.

Yoga then?
Sorry. Doing exercise that involves twisting or stretching the scar will lead to the skin tearing more, which will lead to more scar tissue forming, leading to a much bigger and uglier scar.

Oh, what can you do to start back on the road to fitness then?
Walking and pelvic floor exercises should be as energetic as it gets until those deep abdominal muscles have had a chance to re-join, then you can start upping the tension level. You’ll be surprised how good you will start feeling if you start going for short walks (5 minutes maximum) right from the time that your IV line and catheter are taken out!

There are many other specific exercises after a cesarean section, that will enable your body to heal properly, lose that extra fat around your middle – I know it wasn’t there before – boost your energy and confidence levels and avoid any further pain from your c section.
